Verbo Tener (Verb to Have)

The verb ‘tener’ is a key verb.  It is also necessary to be able to talk about your family.  Always learn verbs in the same order – I, you, he / she / you (formal), we, you (pl), they / they / you (formal pl).  Try chanting it to a rhythm or singing it in time with a tune!

Singular
yo tengo – I have
tú tienes – you have
él tiene – he has
ella tiene – she has
usted tiene – you have (polite)

Plural
nosotros tenemos – we have
vosotros tenéis – you have (pl)
ellos tienen – they have (masc or mixed)
ellas tienen – they have (fem)
ustedes tienen – you have (polite pl)

Tomar – to have (food or drink)

*Remember ‘tomar’ only means ‘to have’ when you say you have something to eat or drink, otherwise you need to use the verb ‘tener’.*

Some verbs change the vowel in the ‘stem’.  Below are examples of 2 verbs that change from ‘e’ to ‘ie’:

Pensar – to think

pienso – I think
piensas – you think
piensa – he / she / you (polite) thinks
pensamos – we think
pensáis – you (plural) think
piensan – they / you (polite plural) think

Preferir – to prefer

prefiero – I prefer
prefieres – you prefer
prefiere – he / she / you (polite) prefers
preferimos – we prefer
preferís – you (plural) prefer
prefieren – they / you (polite plural) prefer

Describir una Persona – Verbo Ser (to be)

We usually use the verb ‘ser’ (to be) to describe people’s appearance and character.  This verb is a ‘key verb’ which means that it is very important and you need to learn it off by heart.  Always learn verbs in the order shown below (I, you, he/she/you polite, we, you pl., they/they/you polite pl.)

Learn the verb ‘ser’ and then translate the sentences below into Spanish:
